"...what I think is inevitably
going to happen is a free and independent Kosova.....
with God's good will, with our brains, and with the resolve you have
shown for so many years...."
Senator Joseph R. Biden
Chairman, Senate Foreign Relations Committee
April 28, 2002, Sheraton Hotel, New York City
Dear fellow Albanian American,
On April 28, 2002, at the Sheraton
Hotel in New York City, the Albanian American Civic League did something
special. We brought together Senator Joseph Biden (Chairman of the Senate
Foreign Relations Committee), Congressmen Ben Gilman and Tom Lantos
(leading members of the House International Relations Committee), Senator
Charles Schumer, New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, seven Albanian
leaders from Kosova, Albania, Macedonia, Montenegro, and Presheve, and
eight hundred Albanian Americans in a "Salute to Albanian Freedom."
The occasion was the anniversary
of the dinner that was held in the same place and on the same date in
1990, when the Civic League brought academic and civic leaders from
Kosova to expose the brutal occupation of Kosova by Serbian dictator,
now indicted war criminal, Slobodan Milosevic. This event and the Congressional
hearing that preceded it on Capitol Hill marked the beginning of our
struggle for Albanian freedom in the Balkans. Twelve years later, the
2002 dinner and delegation to Washington opened a new chapter in our
quest to empower all Albanians in the Balkans.
Last summer the Civic League introduced
a Congressional Resolution in support of the independence of Kosova
in order to jump-start the debate on final status at a time when the
international community would not even talk about the issue, let alone
act on it. It worked. We have Congressmen Lantos and Gilman to thank
for this courageous action, which broke the silence and generated a
worldwide discussion about Kosova's future as an independent state.
Now, with the retirement of Ben Gilman after thirty years in the House,
Congressman Henry Hyde, Chairman of the House International Relations
Committee, reintroduced our Resolution (H.Res.11) for the independence
of Kosova with Tom Lantos on January 7, 2003, the opening day of the
new Congress.
As we plan our work with the new Congress in 2003 to meet the challenges
that Albanians face for Kosova's independence, genuine democracy in
Albania, and equal rights in Macedonia, Montenegro, Presheve, and Chameria,
we need your help. Please become a card-carrying member of our lobby
in Washington by clicking on the membership card icon, completing the
application form, and using your credit card to make a contribution.
If you prefer, you may mail the application form with your contribution
to the Albanian American Civic League at P.O. Box 70, Ossining, NY 10562.
If you have any doubts about our commitment, track record, and effectiveness
in Washington, please click on the video to hear Senator Biden ask you
to support the Civic League. Also, listen to him talk about how we have
educated him for the past twenty years, and, above all, listen to his
message of hope for justice for Albanians in our time.
Warm regards,
Joe and Shirley
